Divorce and Pets: Custody Agreements and Tips

Pet adoptions significantly increased over the past year since owners have more time at home to train their pet and spend quality time with them. However, as divorce rates keep spiking, pets have become a major factor in prenups and divorces. Now, there is a trend emerging in Alaska and Illinois, and pending in New York, a change in the law giving judges the room to decide what is in the best interest of dogs and pets and to make pet custody decisions. Family Law attorney, Tracey Coates, joined our friends at Fox5 DC, Good Day DC, and shared more information on “Pet Nups” and how to make arrangements for your pet if your marriage is ending.

A few tips from Tracey Coates:

  • Decide who is most invested in the pet
  • Who is taking care of it most
  • Who has time and desire to take care of it most
  • Write a pre or post Pet Nup
