Professional Ethics & Discipline
Paley Rothman’s professional ethics and discipline group advises professionals on compliance with, and defends them against alleged violations of, relevant standards of ethical or professional conduct. Attorneys in this group also frequently serve as mediators for disgruntled parties in professional ethics and possible malpractice claims and also serve as expert witnesses with regard to standards of care and ethical obligations.
Paley Rothman’s attorneys represent respondents throughout all phases of professional licensing, disciplinary and malpractice proceedings. We have successfully defended physicians, psychologists, attorneys, and other licensed professionals charged with violations of their respective codes of professional conduct.
Because each member of Paley Rothman’s professional ethics and discipline group has extensive experience in identifying, evaluating and documenting potential violations of the Rules of Professional Conduct governing attorneys, we often assist other attorneys in analyzing their duties and creating an appropriate and prospective course of conduct. These duties involve conflicts of interest, fee disputes and confidentiality issues among others. We also represent attorneys who have had grievances or malpractice suits filed against them.
Although our attorneys are primarily involved with the Maryland State Bar Association Ethics Committee, we also handle ethics and professional conduct-related matters in the District of Columbia. Our attorneys have also served, at the request of Bar Counsel, as supervisors for attorneys who have been reprimanded. If an envelope from the Bar Counsel ever ends up in your mailbox, our attorneys are well equipped to assist you in responding to it.
